Sacred text does not tell us the "truth" about Mary and Joseph, but it's where we have one of our best opportunities to meet them. Ancient Scripture is a wild and wooly place where the Spirit speaks in unexpected ways across generations. Therefore reading the Bible is not for the faint of heart, no matter your religious background.

This sacred text study fosters self-understanding through the lenses of land, family systems, and history, by working through Mary’s ethnobiography as a young Jewish peasant in the gospel of Luke. Rather than a traditional Bible study, it is a Mary study: What do you see in Mary and Joseph’s story, and why?

Because this class focuses on spiritual AUTO-biography, through the lens of personal sovereignty and fruitfulness represented by Mary’s pregnant virginity (not to mention her non-normative relationship with God and the Holy Spirit), it is not a couples’ class.

The study of Mary will ultimately take us to Jesus, a revolutionary leader and executed criminal. Take some time to build a deeper political framework around your personhood and the personhood of the ones you bring into the world. Because life is still being birthed, nurtured, crucified, and resurrected every day, everywhere.
