The benefits of generosity past, present, and future
Generosity is an enduring superpower! Read about how generosity feeds our spirits today, yesterday and always.
Yesterday:
“Unlike members of other clubs and societies that collected dues and fees to pay for feasts, members of the [early] Christian 'family' contributed money voluntarily to a common fund to support orphans abandoned in the streets and garbage dumps. Christian groups brought food, medicine, and companionship to prisoners forced to work in mines, banished to prison islands, or held in jail. Christians even bought coffins and dug graves to bury the poor and criminals, whose corpses would otherwise lie unburied beyond the city gates. . . such generosity, which ordinarily could be expected only from one's own family, attracted crowds of newcomers to Christian groups, despite the risks." - Elaine Pagels
Today:
“Service to others is an antidote to despair… When the world feels out of control, we face options for how we’ll cope… Getting kids involved in acts of service, generosity, and change-making is crucial to their well-being as well as to co-creating a better world.” - Rev. Amelia Richardson Dress
Always:
“One way to understand our desire to be helpful is that it is the divine spark, or universal love, alive in all of us… The Christ light within us longs to shine in the world.” - Rev. Amelia Richardson Dress
