The Morning Star

Adapted from coloring books by The Christmas Fund

Narrator: In the very, very beginning there was rich, velvety darkness.

In the beginning God said, “Let there be light.”

There had never been any before, but now light was shining!

The light was the light of God’s love for all creation.

It shone to create new beginnings.

It shone to give people purpose.

People loved the light.

But the light of God’s love wanted to draw closer.

Angel - Winged Messenger: Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.

Mary: How?

Angel: The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

Mary: Okay.

Narrator: Then on one special night, when the love of God had come to earth in a little baby called Jesus, the light of God became a star. The star called to shepherds. It called to wise people, “Come and follow!” The light of the moon and stars guides us to God’s love.

The-Shepherd-Narrator: In the field, shepherds were watching their sheep.

Sheep 1: Baaaaaa, Baaaaaaa.

Sheep 2: There’s magic in the air!

Angel: Then a messenger of God came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. Don’t be afraid! I have good news for all people. To you is born in Bethlehem a Savior, Christ the Lord. Glory to God and peace on earth!

Narrator: So the shepherds and the wise people followed the light in the star.

They found the baby Jesus lying in a manger.

It was the morning of a brand new day!

A new light had dawned.

God’s love had come into the world with the birth of the Christ Child.

Jesus came to be a light for ALL of us.

Wise Man 1: We have followed the Star in the East. The star has led us to the newborn king. Now, let us go inside so we can worship him!

Wise Man 2: We have brought gifts to honor the Christ Child. We present him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Joseph (standing with Mary): Thank you! We came from Nazareth to the city of David called Bethlehem to be taxed, and Mary, my wife, was pregnant. She brought forth our firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for us at the inn. His name is Jesus!

Narrator: Jesus showed us how to shine love’s light by comforting people who are sad, sharing with people who have less, and speaking up for justice for everyone.

At Christmas, we take time to show we love and care for each other.

It can get pretty dark without people who help and bring in light.

The light of love that’s inside us comes from God.

The light of God’s love is shining in you.

You can shine love’s light!
