We will write to new church penpals during class on March 7 at 11:30 a.m.
Dear Parents,
We will be doing a service project with the children during Sunday School for the next two classes. If it's a success, we can keep it going!
The children naturally bring such joy to the adults in our church, so we are asking them to help our older members to have more joy in their lives by writing a message (with your help) and drawing a picture. This is a real act of service! The adults who have signed up to be a pen pal are very excited to receive a card and plan to write back, so we hope it will be fun for the child to receive mail!
If you didn't receive the cards and stamped envelopes we sent in the mail, please let us know.
Begin by writing at the top, Dear Miss______ or Mr._________, using first names (such as Miss Ruby or Mr. Keith).
Then help them by writing a message on the card, and the child can draw a picture to go with it; and at the bottom, draw a heart and write their name and age. These are some ideas for messages:
"Flowers to Brighten Your Day"; "Balloons For You!", "Wishing you a Rainbows and Sunshine!" "Sending You Love!"
And the older children may want to write a note on a separate piece of paper to go in the envelope. Ideas are to inquire about the adult's health or ask a question about what they like to do or what they did as a kid; tell the adult what grade the child is in and their favorite subjects; talk about favorite activities or their family.
If we don't have time to finish the cards in class, you could finish later and mail them off. The attachment to this email has a list of the older adults who will be receiving the cards and their addresses. We will assign the children to them in class on Sunday. If you will miss class, we'll send the name later.
I think it will be a more meaningful experience for both the adult and child if they can have an image of who they are writing to. We will show a picture of the adults to the children in class. If you are comfortable with sending me a picture by text or email, I will forward it to the adult who is receiving the child's card.
Thank you so much for helping the children serve in our church so meaningfully.
With love,
Becky
